Ask The Experts About First Multi Core Cpu

Ken asks…

I want to get a new processor and need some help? (more detail)?

ok guys, sorry about how I just threw “I WANT QUAD-CORE” at you last night. I was going through my mobo manual and I found some things you guys should know. im not all too familiar with the advanced parts of computer building, I just know where everything goes. lol. anways, time to get down n’ dirty.
AGAIN! Motherboard is the ASUS M3N72-D

In the Specifications summary for CPU it states this:
AMD Socket AM2/AM2+ for Phenom FX/Phenom/Athlon/Sempron processors
AMD Cool n’ Quit Technology
AMD Live! Ready
Supports CPU TDP up to 140W

Then on Special Features it has the following:
AMD Socket AM2+ Phenom FX/Phenom/Athlon/Sempron CPU Support
THe motherboard supports AMD Socket AM2+ multi-core processors with unique L3 cache and delivers better overclocking capabilities with less power consumption. It features dual-channel DDR2 1066 memory support and acceraltes data transfer rate up to 5200MT/s via HyperTransport 3.0 based system bus.

HyperTransport 3.0 support
HyperTransport 3.0 technology provies 2.6 times more bandwidth than HyperTransport 1.0, radically imrpoving system efficiency to create a smoothe faster computer environment.

AMD Socket AM2 Athlon Series/Sempron CPU support
This motherboard supports AMD Socket AM2 Athlon Series/Sempron processors. It features 2000/1600 MT/s HyperTransport-based system bus, dual-channel un-buffered DDR2 800 memory support, and AMD Cool n’ Quiet Technology.

Native DDR2 1066 Support
This motherboard is the first AMD platform with native DDR2 1066 support. It provides faster data transfer rate and more bandwidth to increase memory computing efficiency, enhancing system performance in 3D graphics and other memory demanding applications.

For my computer specs and other things concerning a new processor, see my old question:

On the box it says “Support AM3 CPU” so I think im one of the lucky guys that got the 1.01G model. Im not sure yet, gimme a sec to check the PCB itself for a model number or something.
Thank you for the answer, Otis, and I like your information about the 6-core CPU, it sounds tempting.. I dont know though, I have to wait a little bit anyways, like maybe till sometime in November, or later, so chances are I might end up with a 6-core CPU. I hope your right in the fact it will support it, cause I babied my computer when I built it. :) THANKS AGAIN DUDE!

The amd Phenom II BE will work in that motherboard.

But personally, I would go with the Phenom II 810 if you need a quad core now. Not many things require more power than that and you can easily overclock them to the 3.5 Ghz range.

Also, AMD is working on a new 6 core CPU what will be a drop in replacement. It should work in this board if you are willing to wait till what should be sometime first half of 2010. (I say should be because it will require a BIOS update that you’ll have to get from ASUS – but they SHOULD have it)

I have seen early ES of this and the new Bulldozer 12 core cpus for servers – they are coming, not just my speculation. (just like the i9 Gulftowns expected during Q1 2010)
