Ask The Experts About Multi Core Cpu

Mandy asks…

multi-core processors advantage over multi-CPU architecture?

What are some of the advantages? (if any) Also, why have they only come out recently?

The most major advantage is size. You can now fit multiple cores into 1 CPU ranther than multiple CPUs. For instance a laptop that has an AMD Turion Dual Core laptop should be equivalent to a Dual Pentium CPU desktop computer clocked at the same speed. Only difference is the size is alot smaller for todays technology. Another example is my workstation at work. It has Dual Xeon CPUs with 4 Cores in each CPU. It would be almost impossible to fit that anywhere but with that technology it allows it to have mulitple cores, but for CAD it works great for generating models.

Another good reason it power saving. Most modern CPUs reduce their clock speed to save power. With multiple cores you can have performance when needed but save power when not needed. Dual CPUs can do this, but once again..alot larger in platform size.

Hope this helps.
