Ask The Experts About 3d Cpu Benchmark

Daniel asks…
Temperatures for Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 1GB GDDR5?
Currently running Idle between 55-57C will spike to max of 72C under full load. I say spike, not stay at. The test which I used was Heaven Benchmark 2.1 with the following settings:
API: DirectX 10
Stereo 3D: Disabled
Shaders: High
Tessellation: Greyed out
Anisotropy: 16
Anti-Aliasing: 8x
Full screen: Checked
Resolution: 1600×900 (My monitor’s max resolution.)
FPS after Benchmark: 28.7
Are these temps good/ safe? Or do I need to cool down more? I know GPU’s run hotter then CPU‘s.
Thanks for the help.

Those temperatures are normal for the HD 4870. This is why HD 4870s do not have a long life span. It would be a great idea to turn the fan speed up on the cooler or get a superior after market cooling solution to the card to bring your temperatures down by about 10 to 15 degrees. With lower temperatures you will also notice more consistent performance.
The original two PCB variant of the GTX295 has temperatures even worse than that out of the box. I took mine apart and replaced the thermal compound with superior arctic silver and re-assembled it. I then turned the fans up to 60 percent at all times. Now the card runs in the high 30′s to low 40′s on base on only reaches about 66 playing a demanding game, like Crysis. I noticed the performance also became more consistent as well with less frame drop.
